    Dragon Land Bakery

125 Walker St. New York, NY 10013

The scum-soaked glass-top tables at Chinatown's Dragon Land Bakery each contain a fish or two, gasping on its last breath of air. There is something infinitely artistic about sitting in the windowed street-corner bakeshop, munching an 80 cent sponge cake, sipping a coffee, and watching a gimmick die before your eyes. Shared tables intensify the sweet intimacy of people watching as does the sugared air (the table inmate has no odor). More >>

  • Drama Book Shop

    250 W. 40th St. New York, NY 10018
212-944-0595 Faced with burgeoning rent and an ominous "demolition clause," co-owner (and former hoofer) Rozanne Seelen moved the Drama Book Shop from its longtime 48th Street space to one nearly three times as large (at 250 West 40th) in 2001.The store now has amply stocked shelves, comfortable chairs, and a theatrical touch on the balconyathe outrA(c) red couch by which Nicole Kidman cavorts in Moulin Rouge. The staff has the requisite recondite knowledge, handling with aplomb a customer's inquiry about Hroswith. Who? "An Alsatian nun around the time of Charlemagne," says Seelen, who knows from Alsatian nuns. "She did bowdlerized versions of Plautus." More >>

  • DSW

    40 E. 14 St. 3rd Floor New York, NY 10003
212-674-2146 In the midst of the new Fileneas Basement, there is DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse). These are the good people who brought us those ads showing a picture of a atrendya shoe next to a baby or a piece of chocolate cake a the idea being that women are bonkers for all these things, but DSWas shoes are so overwhelmingly appealing that we will instantly forget urges to shove chocolate in our faces and bear children at the sight of them. I tend to prefer frosting and baby-butt. One must keep in mind that there are hundreds of shoes at DSW, and you either have the stomach to look through them, or you donat. More >>

  • Duane Reade

    322 8th Ave. New York, NY 10001
212-255-5025 "Who is Duane Reade?" is the question everyone always seems to ask, envisioning some dorkily-named gazillionaire. The chain is actually named for the intersection of its first retail location, opened in 1960 on Broadway between Duane and Reade Streets. Already our favorite drugstore if only for its blessed ubiquity, Duane Reade just smartly partnered up with Chase Manhattan to provide Chase ATMs in every store. aZAPPIA OTHER LOCATIONS: 777 6th Ave Manhattan, NY 10001 (646) 336-8414 333 7th Ave Manhattan, NY 10001 (212) 239-0167 1270 Broadway Manhattan, NY 10001 (212) 560-9811 358 5th Ave Manhattan, NY 10001 (212) 279-0208 Please see for more locations in the city. • Dunhill

545 Madison Ave. at 55th St. New York, NY 10022
212-753-9292 Welcome to the niceties of the old boy's club. If I had a thick wad of cash and an adequately worthy dude, I'd drop the bucks on a stunning pair of Art Deco-esque lighter, or a gorgeous burgundy leather weekend bag. A line of ties and menswear is also available at Dunhill, but it's the accessories and cigars they're most known for. Leather-bound thermos, anyone? More >>

  • Dusica

67 Prince St. New York, NY 10012
212-966-9099 Shoppers might pass this shoe and bag boutique, thinking it is still being renovated, but apparently, that's the look they're going for. A silent, shabbily painted space smelling of powder and perfume, Dusica's leather is soft, beautifully colored, and manipulated into gentle folds and bunches to create a ruffle around the toes or a gathered closure to a handbag. Prices dangle just below $400 for most shoesajust enough to give you that fashionable but still weird look. More >>
