  • Eleni

    Eleni's Cookies

    75 9th Ave. New York, NY 10011
    212-255-7990

http://www.elenis.com This bakery has been serving sweets in Chelsea Market since before it morphed into a tony shopping mall. The space is narrow and bright, with pristine white walls and glass counters filled with baked goods set against bright pink flourishes. There is a reason why all of the cookies look so good; each one is iced by hand. They¹re quite good gifts, seeing as you can get them shaped like everything from butterflies and baseballs to taxicabs and high-heeled shoes. Special events like the Oscars get their own celebrity-themed cookies. There are plenty of cupcakes as well, available in flavors like red velvet, Oreo and a chocolate and vanilla mix. Pick up something in the store or call ahead for special party packages; the staff will even come to your house with custom treats. Everything made by Eleni's is certified Kosher and completely free of nuts.—Keith Wagstaff More >>

  • Elizabeth Center

13 Elizabeth St. New York, NY 10013
    212-431-5150

It's easy to miss the drab office-building facade of Elizabeth Center. Just follow the Chinatown pre-teens down the building's escalator to the basement and you will find a veritable maze of shops selling Mashimaro scented erasers, Pucca-illustrated mugs, soft Piyo Piyo bedroom slippers, and Astroboy cell phone holders. These anime baubles, which range from $2 to $12, will make whimsical stocking gifts for your 10-year-old cousin or for friends who can't resist gel glitter pens decorated with dewy-eyed pandas. As the Japanese say, so "kawaii" ("aww, so cute")! More >>

  • EMCA2

240 Elizabeth St. New York, NY 10012
    212-431-4134

http://www.emmettmccarthy.com On Project Runway, contestant Emmett McCarthy's appearance was that of the unerringly dapper WASP, one of our city's beloved lost Gatsby types hell-bent on resurrecting spats or straw hats for one jolly last hurrahaor a trip to CVS for more Charmin Extra Bouncy. We mistakenly assumed McCarthy would be stocking his new shop with clothes for a female Gatsby, but the collection is aimed not at Daisy Buchanan but at a trend-seeking Hamptonite. A lot of the items are similar to what you'd find at Scoop or Intermix: the ubiquitous Moroccan belt; resort-ready jersey-knit dresses with decorative inserts for the 0.002% of humanity who actually seek out resort wear; a white jersey-knit top heavily beaded at the collar, negating the need for a necklace but fulfilling that vital unspoken requirement at the Scoop storeaeverything must go with Earnest Sewn jeans. But his simple, elegant halter dresses in silk and linen are cut in a kind, universally flattering fit, emphasizing what's up top while gliding mercifully over our adorable guts. This is what you should expect from a $340 gown, yet don't always receive. More >>
