  • Lane Bryant

380 Kings Highway Brooklyn, NY 11201
    718-855-8300

http://www.lanebryant.com Lane Bryant aims to give the plus-size customer a much-needed dose of glamour and fun, as well as providing her with basic looks for work or weekend. It's a generally successful endeavor, and good thing, too, since the primary clientele here doesn't have many other places to score chic and cheap plus-size clothes. More >>

  • Las Venus

163 Ludlow St. New York, NY 10002
    212-982-0608

The oldest vintage outpost on Ludlow, Las Venus is a goofy modern furniture store across from TG-170. If the shop's bohemian credentials are somewhat tarnished by a sign near the entrance that says, "Also Visit Las Venus at ABC Carpet and Home," it remains a place where you can buy four uncommonly hideous yet oddly fabulous Liberace-worthy chartreuse crushed velvet and Lucite chairs for $895. • Last Word

  • LaVar Hair Designs

    134 W. 72nd St. New York, NY 10023
    212-724-4492

http://www.lavarhairdesigns.com Celebrity stylist Ellin LaVar (I would just like to point out that every stylist in town uses this epithet, and whether they mean they themselves are celebrities or that they serve a celebrity clientele, I have no idea) offers a full range of services at her eponymous salon, but the draw here is the extensions, weaves, and braids. If you're going to take the plunge, at least trust a real expert: Nothing is worse than extensions you can spot a mile away. More >>

  • Layla

    Layla

86 Hoyt St. Brooklyn, NY 11201
    718-222-1933

http://www.layla-bklyn.com Alayne Patrick, the owner of Boerum Hill home goods store Layla and a former film stylist, arranges her shop like a movie set. Starting with a foundation of hand-chosen fabrics that she imports from craftspeople in India, Patrick the store sells beautiful patterned linens, towels, sheets, and pillows, along with an in-house line of cotton dresses and tunics that changes with the seasons. Silver jewelry, sandals, and other accessories, both new and antique, are also available. The stock changes frequently, as small batches of goods are rotated in and out, so it’s worthwhile to stop in and speak with Patrick--about style, her travels, or hows she meshes materials from Southeast Asia with Western sensibilities. If she’s not in, though, be ready for cold salespeople; their disinterest will make the price of your purchase sting more than such luxury usually allows. --Diana Clarke More >>

  • Laziza Sweets

    Laziza Sweets

25-78 Steinway St. Long Island City, NY 11103
    718-777-7676

The selection of cookies and pastries will knock you out at Laziza Sweets, an Astorian showcase of Middle Eastern baked goods, some stuffed with dates and dotted with sesame seeds, others shaped like baskets made from multi-layered filo pastry and overflowing with crushed pistachios, still others resembling Italian cookies dabbed with apricot jelly. And the pre-assembled assortments on the counter are perfect party food. More >>

  • Le Chateau

740 Broadway New York, NY 10003
    212-674-5560

http://www.lechateau.com We all know that when you buy a flimsy top at Le Chateau you wonat be handing it down to your grandkids. Youall be lucky if it stays together for two years, which is odd, because our friendly French-speaking neighbors to the North (Le Chateauas home base) have a much strong track record regarding wastefulness than we do. But back to the clothes. The store used to sell trashy, vampy wear but in the past few years theyave introduced some cute, sexy pieces. A decent place to pick up the occasional something, but be wary of buying your whole wardrobe here. More >>

http://www.theleatherman.com Widely known as the best place for leatherfolk to buy a whip, a pair of chaps, and all kinds of other menacing devices, the Leather Man, a cramped West Village institution, has plenty of nonleather goodies downstairs, including an entire glass case of penis pumps. • Lee's Art Shop

    220 W. 57th St. New York, NY 10019
    212-247-0110

http://www.leesartshop.com Leeas isnat your typical art supply store. Sure, it sells colored pencils and nice paper, but it also sell couches, desks, lamps, or statues that Mom would love/hate for her birthday. Matter of fact, Saturday Night Live uses their furnishings for the set. The four-story midtown location has a large, kitschy storefront that makes you wonder if it could rival Barneys or Saks for Christmas window designs. More >>

http://www.leggiadro.com When i'm feeling preppy (ironically, more often than not), I stick to thrift store polo shirts and boat shoes from David Z. People who are serious, on the other hand, might take a little visit to Leggiadro and pick up a cashmere scarf for a thousand dollars, or cords for $275. Luckily for real WASPS, they also have store in Nantucket and Palm Beach. More >>
