  • Min-K

    334 E. 11th St. New York, NY 10003
    212-253-8337

http://minknyc.blogspot.com Tired of the same overpriced crap from Scoop and Intermix? A trip to Min-K is the solution, with two racks of layered, pleated miniskirts, diaphanous little-kid tunics, and pea coats and shift dresses that come with their own attached capelet. The proprietor (a Parsons grad) designs half the candy-colored dresses and tops here, and purchases the rest on trips overseas to the Far East. More >>

  • Minamoto Kitchoan

    Minamoto Kitchoan

509 Madison Ave. New York, NY 10022
    212-489-3747

If you want to send a thoughtful but noncommittal gift to your sweetheart, Minamoto Kitchoan has just the confounding confections. No telling what that special someone will make of "dry persimmon, filled with white beans coated with sweet red bean jelly." Or "sweet red bean paste sandwiched in sweet mini pan cakes." In the cold months, you can get sugarcoated sweetened chestnuts; in the summer and spring, jelly balls made from white peaches and mineral water! More >>

The tasteful cowboy boot: not an oxymoron, at least as far as Mind Boggler is concerned. This shop offers smooth selection from solid bootmakers like Durango and Frye, and more understated picks from super cowboy-boot purveyor Tony Lama. More >>

  • Miu Miu

100 Prince St. New York, NY 10012
    212-334-5156

http://www.miumiu.com Miu Miu is a collection of nutty, slightly more affordable clothes from the ever cerebral, ever bizarre Miuccia Prada. Thereas something vaguely autocratic about Prada; one suspects that if she had her way, all teenagers would be dressed head to toe in Miu Miu. Thatas not necessarily such a bad thing. More >>

  • Mixona

262 Mott St. New York, NY 10012
    646-613-0100

http://www.mixona.com The spare, modern interior of Mixona is a nice alternative to the pink walls of the average lingerie shop. Here, the treatment is decidedly boutique-y, though the space is fairly large for the neighborhood: the racks highlighting names both famous and unheard of, the louche local girls fingering the wares warily. http://www.moltonbrown.com Unabashedly English, unashamedly luxurious, Molton Brown sells very high-end cosmetics: a little something to adorn the face, and a little something to care for it. Molton Brown is certainly a spot for the woman who already has everything, save well-tended skin. More >>

This is as glamorous as Avenue A gets, with a slick store that would be at home on Madison Avenue and a stock of dramatic tie-dyed frocks, shirts, and lingerie dresses that exude a Janis Joplin-meets-Jean Harlow air. • Mondo Kim's

    124 1st Ave. New York, NY 10009
    212-533-7390

http://www.mondokims.com Vying with Other Music for the title of hippest Manhattan record store, Kimas traffics in much of the same art-rock, indie, and electronic music fare, with some important differences. On average, the staff tends to be more laconic and standoffish than Other Musicas, so it can be harder to get buying advice. Kimas is larger and slightly cheaper than Other Music, though, and it sells plenty of books and DVDs, too. The sprawling used CD section is definitely worth checking out. Often, you can find the same album in the used section for $8.99 that would cost $15.99 if you picked it up at the opposite end of the store. More >>
