http://www.tiffany.com Immortalized by the classic shot of a Givenchy-clad Audrey Hepburn, munching on a danish (yeah right) and envying the aother worlda behind those bejeweled windowsa|. The trademark little blue box has always been billed as the gift ladies love, whether it carries the ubiquitous Elsa Peretti bean necklace, Paloma Picassoas bold baubles, or the mother engagement rock of every golddiggeras dreams. • Timberland

474 Broadway New York, NY 10013

    212-228-2748

http://www.tiny-living.com As gimmicks go, this one is actually kind of genius: a design store full of cool looking objects for a small apartment in the city. Manhattan dwellers, who work hard to lay their heads right next to a refrigerator, will feel like kids in candy stores when they step into this appropriately small space to peruse the collection, which includes mini juicers, collapsable wine racks, nesting tables, folding chairs, and so-on. Even if you have space somehow, there will be something you want here, and many good gift ideas. More >>

620 Ave. of the Americas New York, NY 10011
    212-229-0875

http://www.tjmaxx.com Walking the line between bargain and schlock, TJ Maxx is not for the faint of heart. Persistence is often rewarded here, and sometimes in-depth searching of the racks will yield some remarkable treasures: not-too-irregular designer goods, surprisingly wearable no-name goods, a smattering of acceptable linens or other housewares. Sometimes, though, the bad lighting and incredible disarray are just too dispiriting, even for the most dedicated treasure hunter. More >>

  • TKNY

    21 Ave. B New York, NY 10009
    212-677-0500

With a large-screen window display transmitting various media, TKNY appears to be a gallery. Inside, various stalls resemble science projects, though they display objects for sale. By careful examination, I found a necklace that lights up, inflatable speakers, and Archimedes, a little green man in a bottle who I'm still trying to figure out. A store that makes me use my brain more than I am accustomed to when shopping is not entirely a bad thing. More >>

The kids' shoes are cute, though it's always mildly disturbing when young children are dressed like mini-adults. More >>

  • Tops on the Waterfront

    85 N. 6th St. Brooklyn, NY 11211
    718-782-6660

In a neighborhood littered with C-Towns, specializing in rotten produce and questionable meat, the grocery Tops on the Waterfront was a welcome addition. Get all your grocery needs taken care of in one stop, if you donat have time to hit the eight bodegas necessary to buy the ingredients for one meal. Although a bit pricey, Tops has an outstanding selection of organic frozen dinners, a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, cheeses, steaks, and sausages.
