  • 1 of a Find

    633 Vanderbilt Brooklyn, NY 11238

  • 3R Living

    3R Living

    276L 5th Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11215
718-832-0951 Happy eco-couple Samantha Delman-Caserta and Mark Caserta provide home decor and housewarming gifts which are environmentally-friendly and don't stomp on the little people, at 3R Living, their Park Slope gift shop. Short for the big three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), 3R is the kind of place you can pick up both phosphate-free, biodegradable dishwashing liquid and $56 picture frames fashioned from discarded Argentinian boat wood at the same time. FYI: 3R runs its own in-store recycling program, accepting batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, CD cases, handheld electronics, and, for some reason, crayons. More >>

  • 826NYC

    372 5th Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11215
718-499-9884 As far as shopping experiences that involve teeny dioramas, lumberjacking supplies, identical items with randomly assigned prices, models of bird feet cast in pewter, and extensive annotations from Dave Eggers go, you can't do much better. I mean, you can buy copies of McSweeney's elsewhere, but can you look at developing state-fair-grade pumpkins at the same time? More >>

  • Acorn

323 Atlantic Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11201
718-522-3760 The perfect place to buy a gift for a toddler or young child. Acorn has unique, hand-made toys (many wooden) that return to the days of using one's imagination instead of playing with computerized robots, or whatever kids have these days. But that's not to say they are boring. The great thing about this place is that kids can see how they work and manipulate them directlyano batteries. For example, a four year old will flip for a wooden car that winds up with a rubber band and then zooms across the floor. More >>

  • Actors Fund Arts Center

  • All-star Locksmith & Hardware

284 Flatbush Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11217
718-622-0100 Yes, it's just a hardware store. There are a lot of them right in the area, including the brightly-lit, immaculate and sprawling Pintchik paint and hardware store. But this placeasmall and a little dingyais run by a couple of guys who will ask you a few crucial questions about the clog in your drain, and then tell you which stuff they use in their own homes (it's not Drano). And that shit works so well, you'll wish you had another clog to destroy. More >>

  • Amarcord

223 Bedford Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11211
718-963-4001 Amarcord might be Fellini's craziest movie. Well, it's a toss-up, but this shop certainly brings color to a Fellini world of glamorous, confident, sexy, and often quirky women. This is pristine vintage, always in mint condition, and always reflecting (and supplying) current high fashion designers. The prices are fair, meaning it's fair that you would pay over $500 for a gigantic, flawless vintage crocodile bag, but you would also gladly shell out $85 to $110 for a sweet wool cowl-necked sweater or $45 for a pretty button-down shirt, especially because they look like new. Those searching for big names will find Sergio Rossi shoes, Gucci and Dior bags, and clothing from Pierre Cardin, Versace, Valentino, Kenzo, and Yves Saint Laurent. But some of the best finds here are label-less Italian vintage pieces, dead-stock Italian military items, and an array of vintage sunglasses ($110 to $200). The East Village location has more big names and prices. More >>

  • American Apparel

    104 N. 6th St. Brooklyn, NY 11211
718-218-0002 Slowly but surely, American Apparel is taking over Manhattan. The company focuses on the basics: AA's simple cotton clothes prioritize fit and material, and they're not produced in sweatshops, so they're politically sensitive, too. Those who balk at paying (relatively) high prices for tees and underwear need only to try these on to be convinced. Their aggressive retail strategy (so many stores in so short a time!) is a bit off-putting, though. More >>

  • Arayssi

    7126 5th Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11209
212-745-2115 We thought that nobody made a good pistachio ice cream until we found a great one in an unpredicted place. In addition to being the city's best Lebanese bakery, Arayssi makes a mellow pistachio ice cream littered with crushed nuts, sold in a quart tub, and quite a bargain. The ice cream has a creamy yet crystalline texture that verges on junket. Baskin-Robbins, eat your heart out! More >>
