    212-966-2120

http://www.babeland.com Put those scenes from Deep Throat out of your mind for just one moment and embrace the notion that feminist pornography is not an oxymoron. It actually does exist, and New York's own girl-powered sex store Toys in Babeland is your best bet to find the work of pioneers like Candida Royalle, Betty Dodson, Annie Sprinkle, and Nina Hartley, as well as next-generation-of-feminista-smut producers Bleu Productions, S.I.R. Video, and the brand-spankin'-new Sex Positive Productions. After all, what could be more feminist than Chloe's I Came, Did You? More >>

131 Spring St. New York, NY 10012
    212-925-9300

http://www.burberry.com/store/burberry/global/regionSet.jsp "Why bother?" you're probably thinking. It's easy enough to score all manner of accessoriesaumbrellas, scarves, hatsawith that tiresome Burberry plaid on Canal Street. True, true, but Burberry's high-end Prorsum collection has yet to be successfully knocked off, and for both women and men, these are some of the coolest threads available. More >>

http://www.calypsostbarth.com Jetting off to St. Tropez? Youall definitely want to make a quick stop at Calypso on your way to the airport. You can fairly feel a warm tropical breeze inside the store, and the tunics, linens, and sunglasses are as inviting as warm sand. • Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

    Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

65 Bayard St. New York, NY 10013
    212-608-4170

http://www.chinatownicecreamfactory.com After dining (or eating, as is probably wiser and more likely) in one of Chinatownas hundreds of restaurants, mosey over to the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory for good, not great ice cream in beloved green tea, red bean, ginger, lychee, or almond-cookie flavors. Being of the very creamy, sweet, slightly gummy variety, it wonat challenge even the most tourist-y palette. Itas like how pot leads to the hard stuffayou start with this quaint ice cream store, but the next thing you know, you canat get enough taro jelly or glutinous dumplings. More >>

  • Crumpler

45 Spring St. New York, NY 10012
    212-334-9391

http://www.crumpler.com/us/ On a corner of Nolita, catty-corner from Spring Street Lounge and across the street from Pomodoro's Pizza, sits a Crumpler store we must have passed a hundred times without bothering to look inside. If we had, we would have found floor-to-ceiling walls crammed with no-frills bags in all shapes, colors, and sizesafrom iPod pouches to sacks big enough to smuggle a kid in. The various styles are not intuitively labeled "small backpack" or "large messenger bag," but bear curious names like "The Breakfast Buffet," "The Salary Sacrifice," "The Soupansalad," and even "The Moderate Embarrassment," "The Considerable Embarrassment," and "The Dreadful Embarrassment." Funny names for what appear to be fairly basicaalbeit impressively indestructibleabags. It's indicative of the kooky, unconventional marketing strategy of this Australian companyathe greatest manifestation being Crumpler's annual beer for bags exchange, where the stores accept beer in lieu of cash for two weeks. • Di Palo

    Di Palo's Fine Foods

200 Grand St. New York, NY 10013
    212-226-1033

http://www.dipaloselects.com Starting out as a conventional latticini, DiPalo Dairy has fulfilled its mandate to produce excellent mozzarella, and then some. But they've also reached back to the old country for a stunning selection of imported cheeses and charcuterie, sliced by Louis DiPalo and staff, who are never in such a hurry that they can't pause to discuss the merits of a piave or pecorino. • Diesel

68 Greene St. New York, NY 10012
    212-966-5593

http://www.diesel.com I watch a lot of the WB (you have something to say?) and I've noted, with some dismay, that many of the characters on this network's fine programs wear clothes from Diesel. I didn't know Diesel had an outpost in Everwood, Colorado, but I guess even mountain men deserve jeans so tight they threaten fertility and shirts and jackets so ugly they almost transcend the binary of attractive-unattractive altogether, served up by the most hostile pretty-boy staff in town. More >>

  • Diesel Style Lab

    416 W. Broadway New York, NY 10012
    212-343-3863

http://www.diesel.com I'm not wholly convinced that this place isn't just a massive psychology experiment being run by some area institution of higher learning. The goal? To determine whether the hordes can be deceived (by a familiar brand name, an expensive location) into buying the world's most hideous clothes. More >>

  • DKNY SoHo

    420 W. Broadway New York, NY 10012
    646-613-1100

http://www.dkny.com DKNY has emerged from its difficult adolescence (all those logos!) nicely, and now offers perfectly serviceable, reasonably-priced menas and womenas wear. The clothes might lack the masteras touch thatas evident in the signature collection, but you could do a lot worse. More >>

    212-334-4441

http://www.elietahari.com Every sexy, powerful businesswoman seems to have at least one Elie Tahari pants suit located somewhere in her closet, sandwiched between the Armani and the Calvin Klein. Add a pair of Manolos, and the Master of the Universe look (estrogen edition) is complete. More >>

  • Emporio Armani

    410 W. Broadway New York, NY 10012
    646-613-8099

http://www.emporioarmani.com I actually prefer this line to the Giorgio Armani Collection, and not just because I'm a cheapskate; the looks tend to be a little sleeker and a bit more energeticageared toward the younger customer. These threads still cost a pretty penny, of course, but looking good requires hard work. More >>

  • Enchanted Forest

85 Mercer St. New York, NY 10012
    212-925-6677

Live trees separate different sections of this store, a jungle of marionettes, rubber frogs, stuffed lemurs, and glow-in-the-dark stars. More >>

  • Eres

98 Wooster St. New York, NY 10012
    212-431-7300

http://www.eresparis.com If you want to look chic and oh-so-French at the beach, but aren't quite ready to go topless, Eres makes body-flattering (and not too wallet-depleting) swimwear with contours and simple color palettes that are terribly continental. There's also a fine selection of similarly well-designed lingerie. More >>
