"No one knows anyone, what could be truer." A line from L.A.-based electroclash band Dirty Sanchez's sadistic single "Really Rich Italian Satanists"; moreover, a pitch-perfect encapsulation of the terrestrial terror of Takashi Miike's Audition (1999), a horror film wherein delicate surfaces mingle with a character scarier and more unknowable than darkness itself. The set-up is gentle and revolting all at once: Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), an aging widower, is urged by his son to return to the pleasures of the fairer sex, so a few lecherous old men cook up a casting-couch scenario to find him a trophy wife. When Aoyama meets and falls for Asami (Eihi Shiina), a seemingly demure girl half his age with a penchant for dismemberment, an unsettling truism comes to light: While anything can hide in darkness, real terror is that which successfully disguises itself in plain sight.
