Candy: From Early History to Halloween

Candy: From Early History to Halloween

Sarah Lohman

If you want a bit of background information to contextualize your October sugar highs, this Brooklyn Brainery class can help. Historical gastronomist Sarah Lohman will teach you all about why we let children threaten people for candy once a year, in addition to expounding on the more global origins of sweets in general. Leave the lecture understanding things you didn't have a clue about walking in: the botanic origins of sugarcane, the story behind the first candies made in the Middle East, how medieval Europe made "magical candy medicines." There will also be plenty of historic candy samples to get you into the holiday mood.
