Cherylyn Lavagnino

Charles Roussel

Fri., June 3, 7:30 p.m. 2016
Cherylyn Lavagnino's mission, she says, is to unite the strict rigor of classic ballet with the more humanistic performance values of contemporary dance. Her beautifully trained chamber dance troupe of four men and seven women offers three dances in this spring bill, including the 2012 Triptych, which links music by François Couperin to a commissioned score by Scott Killian; Nadeje, to a Janácek violin sonata, which explores repression and freedom in Czech society and is inspired by the writer and politician Václav Havel; and a new all-female work, Veiled, grounded in Azar Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran and Sarah L. Kaufman's The Art of Grace, accompanied by chamber music by Martin Bresnick from his CD Prayers Remain Forever.
