Cuban Heavy Metal Sci-Fi: An Evening With Yoss

Emily Maguire

"Cuban Heavy Metal Sci-Fi: An Evening With Yoss" scrutinizes the state of Cuban science fiction through a discussion with the playfully outrageous self-described "medieval-rocker" born José Miguel Sánchez Gómez. Yoss, as Gómez is much better known, has written some twenty novels; Super Extra Grande, his most recent (as translated by David Frye), concerns a veterinarian who specializes in treating gigantic alien animals in a future universe where Spanglish serves as lingua franca. "Agua here smell muy strange después del morpheorol y el laxative," says the gut-spelunking vet in Yoss's parody of the immigrant experience. "Hoy not be buen día for el tsunami bowel cleanse." Expect Yoss, who also fronts the Cuban death-metal outfit Tenaz, to provide head-banging fodder as well.
