An American who moved to Europe after studies at Milwaukee's Marquette University, John Neumeier has directed the Hamburg Ballet since 1973. He's made more than 150 pieces, playing the edge between contemporary dance forms and the classical repertoire. For its first appearance at the Joyce, his troupe offers Old Friends, a world premiere he describes as a "collage" of previous ballets, in which 25 dancers partner one another, in "constantly changing configurations," to recordings of Chopin and Simon & Garfunkel. "There is a strange, indefinable, but for me clear relationship between the music of Frédéric Chopin and that of Simon & Garfunkel," says Neumeier. "Chopin's music unites nineteenth-century salon elegance with profound emotion, just as the songs of the Sixties by Simon & Garfunkel link accessible sound with poetically relevant lyrics."
