Last year, the Guardian declared Jacob Collier "jazz's new messiah." This past July — just weeks before his 22nd birthday and days before the release of his Billboard-jazz-chart-topping debut record In My Room — the British prodigy opened for Kamasi Washington in Central Park and put on one of the more unique shows in recent memory. Completely alone onstage, Collier ripped through about a dozen instruments per song, looping complex drumbeats, guitars and bass riffs, and pianos and keyboards (one of which syncs with his voice) to create a frenzied take on funk and jazz. Those in the crowd that beautiful summer day aren't alone in being completely blown away — Collier has made fans out of some of jazz's greatest living musicians, including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones, the latter of whom acts as his personal mentor. The "new messiah" label may be hyperbole, but it's not too far off, either.
