Jen George's weird and fascinating debut book, The Babysitter at Rest, is a collection of five near-novella-length stories. Her subjects range from narcissism in the medical profession to art- school orgies, but most compelling is her treatment of growing up, which, as per the collective Millennial struggle, seems to happen around age 33. In "Guidance/The Party," a stunted woman is visited by an ethereal guide and provided instruction on how to ease into a belated adulthood. The resulting audit is both hilarious and sobering, an instruction manual on the finer points of aging. George is joined by poet and playwright Ariana Reines at this book launch, co-hosted by Bomb magazine.
