Seeing Jerry Seinfeld performing stand-up on the Upper West Side is a local equivalent to spotting a beluga whale swimming in the Arctic. This year, such sightings will come with regularity: Throughout 2016, the comedian holds a monthly residency at his local theater of choice, the charmingly garish Beacon. Seinfeld is growing crankier as he approaches dotage, and while this may prove annoying for his relatives, it is a boon for those audience members who take their stand-ups old, Jewish, and ornery. The residency — composed of Seinfeld's polished act as opposed to the embryonic material he workshops at club drop-ins — was inspired in part by Billy Joel's never-ending stand at Madison Square Garden. The Long Island–based Joel commutes to those shows via helicopter; it is nice to imagine Seinfeld shunning his cheesy sports cars and arriving at the Beacon on foot.
