Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait

For a dusty yet revelatory blast from the past, visit Duke University's online digital collection and browse through Depression-era filmmaker H. Lee Waters's "Movies of Local People." Shot in small towns across the South between 1936 and 1942 so the locals could see themselves onscreen, Waters's charming and intimate footage — often augmented by trick shots and backward motion — provides the raw material for violinist-composer Jenny Scheinman and filmmaker Finn Taylor's new collaboration, Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait. Accompanied by guitarists Robbie Fulks and Robbie Gjersoe, Scheinman's songs celebrate Kannapolis, North Carolina's alter ego as the City of Looms, meditate on small-town movie culture, and contain at least one immortal line in "You got those 'n' I got these, / I can share my cooties with who I please."
