Berlin-based artist Katharina Grosse's ever more eerie site-specific projects have come to the Rockaways. Here the painter has transformed Fort Tilden's condemned aquatics building into a massive 3-D canvas by applying her signature luminescent paint to its rotting exterior. The effect is at once electrifying and haunting — a building resurrected on the horizon, with its decay underscored. As in past works along the Amtrak corridor and in post-Katrina New Orleans, Grosse calls attention to our losses even as we marvel at the sublime. The piece continues MoMA P.S.1's post-Sandy interventions in the Rockaways, lending gravitas to beach days.
