With The Liars' Club in 1995, Mary Karr bolstered the memoir as an artform, helping secure it a place on bestseller lists and in the pop-culture conversation at large. What's remarkable, though, is that she did so by writing about a resolutely normal life. No Nobel Prizes or Heisman Trophies — just a Texas town, a working-class family, and a childhood spent absorbing barroom stories with her dad. There are few more qualified to teach the form, and Karr does so with exuberance in The Art of Memoir. Tonight she reads from the new book, which draws from thirty years of experience teaching memoir writing at Syracuse. Stick around for a mini-class, during which Karr demonstrates her process, shares secrets, and teaches writers how to tap into those dark corners of personal experience.
