National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica

National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica

Bryan Robinson

Six different choreographers contribute pieces to a concert by this venerable troupe, co-founded in 1962 by the late Rex Nettleford, who's represented on this program by his 1983 Gerrehbenta. (The other founder, Eddy Thomas, also passed recently, in 2014.) Also on the bill are works by former Graham and Ailey dancer Clive Thompson; by David Brown, another Graham dancer who also worked with Elisa Monte; and New York premieres by Renee McDonald, Kevin Moore, and current artistic director Chris Walker. What these artists have in common is their birth on the Caribbean island of Jamaica; much of the repertoire is derived from authentic folk material, and some of the pieces have live accompaniment by the company's own singers and orchestra, under the direction of composer and arranger Ewan Simpson.
