True to the title of her 2015 debut album, Weaving the Pieces, Sarah Golley builds out her sound by intertwining live loops, charging piano chords, and brooding lyricism. Golley comes from a musical-theater background, which, combined with her jazz sensibilities, allows each of her songs to stand on its own as a kind of individual performance piece. On "Venom" and "Sludge," the singer simultaneously establishes a narrative of strength and angst — a dichotomy she maintains throughout her music — while offering rich sonic textures. The record's title track, meanwhile, tones down any added frills to instead show off Golley's vocal range; equipped with only a keyboard and looping machine, Golley is able to achieve a moody opulence rare among solo artists.
