Choreographer-comedian Adrienne Truscott hosts the 32nd NY Dance and Performance Awards, a/k/a the Bessies, back in Brooklyn with a glam parade of artists, celebrity presenters, video tributes, and special guests, as well as Donald McKayle's Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder, recipient of this year's Outstanding Revival award, performed by the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. Most winners are still a mystery even to the voters, but already announced are Joya Powell, recipient of the Emerging Choreographer prize; tap queen Brenda Bufalino, honored for Lifetime Achievement; the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts and Alex Smith of the Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center, both cited for Outstanding Service to the Field of Dance; and Eiko Otake, receiving a Special Citation for her deep and sprawling Danspace platform, A Body in Places. The ceremony is preceded by an "Angel" cocktail party, at the Mark Morris Dance Center across the street (check for tickets to that), and followed by an after-party at BRIC (647 Fulton Street), with a cash bar, free pizza, and "dancing with the stars."
