When we think of Latin American art, it’s still Frida and Diego who come to mind. But so much has happened to alter the culture since those two and their star-crossed love. Namely, repressive governments, economic highs and lows, a guy named Borges, and a girl named Shakira. This is why the Guggenheim brings us “Under the Same Sun: Art From Latin America Today.” Pablo León de la Barra, the museum committee’s resident expert on the region, organizes this new exhibition featuring work by 37 artists from 16 countries. Paintings, photographs, sculptures, video, and a bevy of mixed-media projects are centered around five themes: “Conceptualism and Its Legacies,” “Tropicologies,” “Political Activism,” “Modernism and Its Failures,” and “Participation/Emancipation.” It also includes footage of a man getting shot out of a cannon.
