Why would you want to pay twice as much for a banh mi on the Lower East than it costs in Chinatown? An Choi may have the answer, with an atmosphere that recalls the night markets of Southeast Asia, and a variation on the classic Vietnamese sandwich made with unctuous pork belly. The pho is fine, too, with a broth somewhat paler than its Baxter Street counterparts, but the apps fall short--so stick with soups and sandwiches. The presence of actual comfortable seating is another plus, as is the fine waitstaff and, for now, BYOB! (Mexican beer goes great with this food; find it at the bodega across Allen Street.)
