This place almost seems lost in time, a relic from an earlier era in New York's history. A green sign festooned with antique lamps marks the outside. Step down the stairs past the weathered tables sitting under faded tarps and enter the dimly lit dining room. Overhead, fake plants form an ersatz jungle canopy, while green leather banquettes and wooden tables provide seating for about 30 or so. The food here has Russian and French accents, including entrees like the beef stroganoff, Russian-style peasant beef in a red wine sauce and lamb shanks braised in a rosemary and garlic sauce. Caviar makes an appearance in several dishes like the smoked trout roulade and pelmeni pasta. The crowd is made up of a nice mix of ages and backgrounds; a lot of them come here for the booze, which includes a long list of infused vodkas and specialty martinis, plus beers by the bottle and sangria.—Keith Wagstaff
