One spring day in 1991, a group of local artists got together to make art with homeless kids at a NYC shelter. Theyave been doing it ever since, under the name Art Start. Bringing art education to underserved children and teenagers, this group has now been nationally recognized and its methods are used as models for bringing inspiration into shelters and creativity to childrenas lives. It uses an approach to teaching that is centered not around an agenda, but around the kids and their interests. It aims to nurture creativity, and also to equip kids with the ability to ask important questions and make independent choices.
