Three decades ago in Chinatown, a handful of idealist immigrant activists came together. To further aThe American Dream,a they chartered a group to teach and advocate Asian American rights and prosperity. For three decades, AAFE has worked to help Asian Americans attain everything from education to homeownership to basic legal representation. Since, the group has shifted from a community advocate group to being a real community builder. Its Rebuild Chinatown Initiative, for example, began after 9-11 exacerbated already existing community instability, and is aimed at creating housing, commerce, and energy along and around Canal Street. Volunteer to work in the office (tech support or administration) or at a social event, like the several street fairs AAFE attends annually.
