Although most of the clientele are vegans, plenty of carnivores come here to take the occasional meat sabbatical. The menu and décor are a bit more upscale than most vegan places, eschewing the usual New Age or punk rock look for something sleeker and more sophisticated. Shiny hardwood floors, understated dark blue upholstered chairs and banquettes and flickering candles on cozy two-tops make for a great vegan date spot. The globe-spanning menu makes good use of meat substitutes: seitan cutlets are pan-seared in a sauce of port wine and mushrooms, tofu is dusted with pistachio and pepper, and French lentils and root vegetables are baked into a phyllo crust. The small wine list features around 20 bottles from all over the world, with half of them available by the glass. From Friday through Sunday, the restaurant serves a more casual lunch menu featuring soy bacon cheeseburgers and vegan burritos.—Keith Wagstaff
