Blue Owl claims to be a speakeasy but don't expect old-school Prohibition Era décor. This subterranean lounge is sleek as can be; walk downstairs off the street and into a low-ceilinged room with illuminated stone walls. Bartenders mix complicated drinks at the large copper bar, utilizing ingredients like fresh ginger, muddled strawberries and cardamom-infused Maker's Mark. There is also a small selection of New and Old World wines available by the glass and bottle. Settle down into one of the cushy velvet chairs or banquettes lined with shiny pressed tin and snack on house-cured olives, charcuterie plates with meat provided by Salumeria Biellese and cheese plates provided by Murray's Cheese. The vibe is mellow on weekdays, when the bar offers specialty cocktails for only $6 until 8pm. On weekends the place fills up with well-heeled partiers who come to dance to the DJs spinning eclectic dance music and live jazz bands.—Keith Wagstaff
