This small grocery store is the anchor of the burgeoning West African community of Hollis, Queens. Sure you can buy your Emu here (an alcohol-free version of palm wine with a winning musty flavor), and your athieke, too (a cassava meal from Ivory Coast that cooks up like couscous), but the majority of the groceries are Nigerian, including English canned goods, grain meals and sauces, folk remedies, pharmaceuticals, and beauty products. But what draws us back is the single frozen meal available daily for carryout -- in this case fish pepper soup, a stew featuring big, bone-in hunks of fish in a concentrated brown broth that's the spiciest thing we've ever eaten. No kidding! Pour it over rice, mashed tubers, or what you will.
