The gourmet food market-restaurant hybrid isn't anything new, especially in Brooklyn, but Brucie has set itself apart by offering reasonably priced, hearty Italian eats. The nightly changing menu combines classic red sauce staples (spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, etc.) with more inventive dishes like ear-shaped pasta with octopus, lavender and hazelnuts. The simpler bites tends to be best, though-don't miss the crostini topped with the house-made mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. It's not unusual to see customers lingering in the welcoming space, which sort of resembles a cross between a rustic bistro and Midwestern diner.
