This offshoot of the Burger Joint in Midtown's Parker Meridien hotel -- famous for being located off the lobby behind a curtain, creating a strange juxtaposition of burger fanatics and upscale Francophile hotel patrons -- was a long time in coming, 10 years in fact. Made with non-pedigreed, but very good, ground beef, the burgers are plain in the extreme, and you can have them cooked to any level of doneness. Be assured, if you ask for medium rare, the patty will be exactly medium rare. Burger toppings are limited to cheese, lettuce, tomato, raw onions, and pickle chips. Fries are way above average, too, of the shoestring variety popularized by McDonald's. Thick milkshakes, soft drinks, and an occasional dessert or two displayed on the counter are your only other dining options. The space is sprawling and dark, and there's a bar up front that will hopefully be selling alcohol by the time you read this. --Robert Sietsema
