The oval room is a museum of rococo design in pink and powder blue, and there's a little roped-off anteroom for Broadway celebrities--usually occupied by tables of unrecognizable white-haired men. Not only long on atmosphere, Edison offers inexpensive food that's way better than average, combining elements of a Greek coffee shop and Jewish deli. The hot pastrami sandwich is one of the best in town, deep red and streaked with fat, and the blintzes are notorious, too. But cognoscenti often head for the burgers, which include some wacko choices -- the Basqueburger, for example.
