What do you do about a place where the food is often spectacular, but service is so bad you want to wring the preening waiter's neck? Thin as a pencil, and boasting a rush-shaded garden, Caffe Emilia offers a menu that concentrates on panini, salads, small plates, and admirable little desserts, but then oversteps itself by adding primi and secondi to an already complex menu. The kitchen is smaller than a closet. We loved the malfatti–cheesy green dumplings in butter sauce, but the artichoke tramezzini (crustless sandwich) suffered from being pre-made, and the bread had turned soggy. Available all day, the organic-egg breakfasts rule.
