This classic French bistro has been serving Provencal cuisine on MacDougal Street since 1979. The look is seaside Nice, all breezy pastels and white tablecloths with large French windows that open up to the street. The menu is traditional as can be: sautéed calf's liver served in balsamic vinegar and garlic, roasted loin of lamb, Provencal beef stew, duck breast in orange sauce and more. Thrifty locals know to choose their nights. On Tuesdays, you can choose from mussels prepared eight different ways, including with garlic and chorizo or saffron and shallots, for only $10 while on Wednesdays you can pick from eight different meaty dishes such as skirt steak or lamb chops for only $12. The short, moderately priced wine list features bottles from all over France. Of course, what would a traditional French bistro meal be without dessert like the classic crème brulee or the caramelized apple tart.—Keith Wagstaff
