CigkofteM is certainly one of NYC’s strangest eateries. Based on an ancient Turkish recipe, the food offered here is not only vegetarian, but entirely vegan and partly raw foodist, as well. The heart of the menu is cracked wheat mixed into a paste with pepper puree and, according to the website, 18 spices. This is tendered in little red balls, or made into sandwiches or vegetarian burgers in which only the pita or bun is cooked. The small café (stand-up dining only) is part of a 130-unit chain of which this represents the first East Coast branch. Will there be more to follow? Probably not, but as long as this place remains, it provides an interesting dining experience, something like eating Play-Doh.
