Originally located on Pell Street, Danny Ngs (pronounced Eng) is a Cantonese restaurant that doesn't remain mired in the Chinese-American fare of a century ago. Yes, you can get spring rolls, barbecued ribs, and sweet-and-sour pork, but the restaurant, named after a notorious Chinatown chef, continues to innovate almost to the present. Thus there's an entree of curried spareribs stewed in a pumpkin;the waiter slices the squash and the meat spills out; pure invention, and other dishes that show currently popular Hong Kong influences. But some of the Chinese-Lower East Side fusion experiments don't quite work: We're thinking of the gravied slices of indifferent pastrami stir fried with steamed spinach.
