The name pertains to the glass cases filled with Mexican baked goods, puffy rolls and colorful pieces of pan dulce, the slightly sweet Mexican pastry. The menu, printed on huge black poster board all around the restaurant, ventures way beyond just fresh-baked bread. Tortas are popular here, filled with things like breaded chicken breast or grilled ham combined with refried black beans, jalapenos, avocado, cheese and tomato on a white hero roll. Tacos, tamales and burritos are available along with entrees like pollo asado and a hot stew filled with pernil (roasted pork). This is a great breakfast spot as well; order a breakfast burrito or plate of chilaquiles with eggs from 6am to 3pm. As for décor, Downtown Bakery is pretty bare bones, just a few worn-in wooden tables resting over faded tile floors with a few airbrushed paintings hanging on the wall. Luckily the restaurant offers free delivery with a minimum $10 order.—Keith Wagstaff
