This small Mexican joint, open since 1984, was founded way before the nightlife explosion on the Lower East Side, but that doesn't mean it didn't benefit from it. Crowds come in for filling Mexican fare without the trendy trappings of most of the neighborhood's eateries. The design is spare; a few glass-topped green tables, sombreros and Mexican blankets hanging on the walls, a glowing digital jukebox belting out Spanish hits. The menu is similarly unassuming, consisting of Mexican-American classics at prices that will leave you with plenty of cash for bar-hopping later on. A few examples: enchiladas suizas, burritos bulging with meats like pork and shredded beef, tamales, tostadas, chimichangas and more. Margaritas, available by the pitcher, are popular here, as are the Mexican beers and tequila from the bar. The restaurant is fairly boisterous, populated by longtime locals and partying 20-somethings, and only gets more rowdy as it gets closer to last call, seeing that it's open until 2am on weekdays and 4am on weekends.—Keith Wagstaff
