Founded in 1973 and named after a stop in the London tubes, Elephant & Castle is an admirably ancient and crusty West Village refectory, where a snaking layout clad in wood features window seats located around the corner on West 11th Street. The menu's bedrock is hamburgers, omelets, and meal-size salads, which are all quite good in a normal sort of way, but you might also opt for one of the Mexican or Thai flourishes that have crept into the menu in the last few years. And there's no better hideaway for that clandestine date.
