Given the fetishization of pizza and pizzaiolos we're surprised that downtown's new pizza spot, Farinella, hasn't gotten more attention. It's run by a Neapolitan! A Neapolitan rapper, to be precise, named Alberto Polo Cretara. Cretara fashions his pizzas into large oblongs, which are sliced crossways to serve. The pies are available in about a dozen iterations -- margherita, mushroom, zucchini, cotto-arugula, procuitto, et al. We particularly like the Sicilian, a simple, tomato sauced, eggplant slice. Actually, eggplant is a good bet in general. The eggplant panini is gorgeous: purple chunks of eggplant are stewed down to silk and enriched with smoked mozzarella, piled on olive-oil-drenched, homemade bread made from the pizza dough.
