Plastered with photos of soccer teams from Guatemala and Belize, this sunny corner bar in Longwood is a local outpost of the Garifuna, or Black Caribs, who trace their ancestry to African and Amerindian sources. Served family style, a meal centers on a bowl of yuca and green plantains swimming in an unforgettable scallion-laced coconut broth, accompanied by platters of meat and seafood. Highlights of our Saturday afternoon meal included a Creole-style dish of shrimp and conch in a tasty red sauce, and a fried red snapper served with lime wedges, jalapeños, and white rice. Note: current name not on the awning.
