This is the oenophile's alternative to the owner's other spot, Against the Grain, a craft beer bar located next door. Here the focus is on an eclectic, ever-changing selection of wines served by the bottle and quarto. The wine list, which includes a nice selection of sparkling varieties, doesn't have a particular focus other than the owner picked his favorites, regardless of country or style. Share from a menu of contemporary American small plates including a scallop ceviche, braised short ribs with polenta and seared yellowfin tuna, plus a variety of pizzas, sandwiches and cheese plates. Beer nerds have a sizeable selection of craft and high-end imported brews to choose from. Rustic is the predominant aesthetic here; dark-stained wooden tables, exposed brick, wrought-iron bar stools and dangling chandeliers all combine to create a homey atmosphere. Stop in during weekends for brunch dishes like shrimp and grits or a pancetta-topped breakfast pizza.—Keith Wagstaff
