This West Village coffee house tries to evoke a time when the neighborhood was filled with scrappy young artists instead of millionaires and Marc Jacobs stores. The vibe is thrift store chic, with mismatched tables, a cushy red couch, large pieces of artwork hanging off the brick walls and plenty of leafy houseplants. The crowd is pretty typical for a coffee shop: students leafing through textbooks, indigent freelance writers taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi and small groups of well-dressed locals catching up on each other's lives. The coffee used to make the house drip, espresso, lattes and other drinks are all Fair Trade and ready to be mixed with the organic milk shipped from Evans Farms upstate. The menu also includes organic loose-leaf teas, Murray¹s bagels, blended smoothes and sandwiches like salmon salad served on a baguette and smoked turkey on ciabatta bread.—Keith Wagstaff
