A little piece of the East Village in the West, Hanami offers the usual downtown Japanese mix of sushi, noodles, tempura, teriyaki, donburi, and appetizers, where much of the culinary excitement is. Briefly seared tuna tataki, lightly fried aged tofu, and the badly misnamed "squid legs" are recommended. But the real utility of this place lies in its unexpected location, and in the fabulous bento box at dinner, which includes soup or salad, steamed dumplings, mixed sushi rolls, shrimp tempura, pickles, your choice of entree.
