Located in the same space as the late lamented Damascus Gate, with French doors that open onto the street, Hazar is a Turkish joint with a menu not all that different from its Syrian predecessor. That means great (and comparatively cheap) flame-grilled kebabs, of which the ground-lamb adana is the best. A second grilled specialty are the whole fish -- usually porgy, pink snapper, and sea bass -- charred to order and offered with salad and rice pilaf or fries. Other menu highlights include sigara bureka (pastry flutes filled with cheese) and the innumerable bread dips and composed salads that make this the perfect place for mixed crews of carnivores and vegetarians.
