Heartland distinguishes itself with a creative take on bar food, and a hit-and-miss selection of homemade beers. I liked the sprightly Red Rooster Ale, but Golden Sunshine Ale was marred by a weird chemical undertaste. An appetizer of grilled garlic sausage featured a German potato salad made pleasantly kinky with Chinese mustard. In general, the appetizers are a better value than the entrées, with the pupu platter-five hefty plates stacked in a wrought-iron skyscraper-the best deal of all.
