Groups gather here on warm summer evenings, watching the light fade over Tompkins Square Park as they take puffs from towering hookahs on the narrow sidewalk patio. There are more than 20 different types of tobacco to choose from, ranging from basic flavors like mint and cherry to more exotic ones like apple martini and Sex on the Beach. Inside, the design scheme draws inspiration from Egypt and Morocco, with hieroglyphics and paintings of Egyptian gods mixed with antique lamps and palm fronds. The food is mostly Middle Eastern, although you can get steak frites and fajitas as well as kebabs and hummus. Bottles of Middle Eastern beers are available alongside four beers on tap, while the international wine list includes a decent selection from Turkey and Morocco. The mood here is almost always festive, especially when DJs, salsa bands and belly dancers stop in to perform.—Keith Wagstaff
