The East Village outpost of this mini-chain, which has locations in Midtown and the Upper East Side, serves a lot more than just sushi. Expect lots of interesting takes on seemingly basic dishes: seafood teriyaki with white fish, shrimp and scallops, soft shell crab tempura, fried oysters with katsu sauce. There is sushi too, of course, a huge menu with all of the usual rolls and combination plates, plus inventive specialty rolls such as the Bumbo-Bee Roll (tuna, eel and banana tempura) and the New Orleans Rolls (spicy crawfish, spicy tuna, snow crab and eel sauce). Classic udon, soba, tempura and teriyaki dishes are available in case you aren't feeling too adventurous. The narrow dining room has a modern, understated elegance, matching gently illuminated art with white exposed brick.— Keith Wagstaff
