When Upper East Siders are craving a burger, it's almost a sure bet they'll end up here. The hamburger is consistently on critics' "Best Of" lists and it's easy to see why. Huge, loosely packed patties are griddled and then plopped on toasted buns, served with slices of red onion and pickles. You can get one draped in American cheese or topped with crispy bacon. There are a few other menu items as well, hearty American classics like roast beef sandwiches and sirloin steaks. J.G. Melon is really more of a bar than a restaurant, with green-checked tablecloths and kitschy bric-a-brac everywhere. The booze selection is cheap and limited, with Budweiser, Sam Adams and four others are on tap, plus a few others available by the bottle and a small wine list. Stop by an ATM machine before you stop by, as J.G. Melon doesn't accept credit cards.—Keith Wagstaff
