Queens’ oldest Chinese restaurant is King Yum, a place that looks more like a tacky sports bar than an award-winning restaurant, but as any New Yorker knows: Looks can be deceiving. King Yum is one of those great places that has stayed in the family since its opening, and the menu boasts much of the standard Chinese fare. The highlight is the egg foo young, the omelette-and-gravy dish that can only be found at American-influenced Chinese joints. King Yum even has a very extensive gluten-free menu, which is unheard of for this type of place, especially one decked out in Polynesian colors and lined with tribal masks. For those looking for more of a night out than just a nice fried rice, King Yum has karaoke on Fridays. --Shane Barnes
